 A heroic woman

...to the women of Paris
"The Greeks, born to be liberal, will owe their independence
only to themselves. So I don't ask your intervention to force
your compatriots to help us.  But only to change the idea of
sending help to our enemies.   The war spreads the horrible

 death..."
Manto Mavrogenous

The war of independence is a fact ..
The Ottoman Turks who were attacked,
saw a woman attacking brandishing a sword ...
A wild aggressive lion which roared..
They saw a woman as commander
forcefully reminding the Great Alexander ...

She was the Greek heroine of this war

Manto, the protagonist in most lore...
The richest and most beautiful among girls,
who took up arms and was indifferent to gold and pearls...

She spent all her fortune on the Hellenic cause

Everywhere the crowds gave her a warm applause

She equipped, manned and "privateered" two ships

at her own expense, ignoring her parents tips....

Lives in risks, no retreat, no fear, no blench..

She spoke, Italian, Turkish and French..
Under her encouragement, her European friends
contributed money and guns on which depends
the success of every revolution and every war.
Day by day her reputation was increased more.

 She believed that even Cupid
                        she could ignore..

but someday, like all of us,

she paid to love the known cost
This was the only battle that this
                                                                         woman lost.
The handsome General Ypsilanti was the winner ..
They met and loved during a dinner.

  Americans honored General Ypsilanti
               for the heroism of his.
They gave his name to a town,
                                just like this...

   Americans will never know,
  that he loved Manto
for many years in a row.
